Benford’s law and geographical information – the example of OpenStreetMap

چکیده
Few laws about geographical information are known, partly because is inherently complex. Tobler’s first law of Geography and, to a lesser degree, also his second among the rare exceptions. In this article, we explore validity Benford’s in context example OpenStreetMap. More specifically, compare distribution several numerical features entities Benford distribution. It demonstrated that examined accordance with varying degree little variation between types entities. Spatial patterns deviation from shown be similar for some aspects but strongly differ other ones. We show many data tend deviate more than average Africa, Greenland, smaller island countries, South America. Also, scale-dependency explored. Motivated by use detect indications fraud economic and datasets, future prospects limitations systematically develop intrinsic quality measures discussed.

Their interest, support and guidance were of great importance for the progress of this work. At times of despair, their positive attitude helped me to pick up the pace and regain confidence. I would like...
متن کاملHow good is volunteered geographical information? A comparative study of OpenStreetMap and Ordnance Survey datasets
Within the framework of Web 2.0 mapping applications, the most striking example of a geographical application is the OpenStreetMap (OSM) project. OSM aims to create a free digital map of the world and is implemented through the engagement of participants in a mode similar to software development in Open Source projects. The information is collected by many participants, collated on a central da...

15 صفحه اولGeneralizing Benfords Law Using Power Laws: Application to Integer Sequences
A simple method to derive parametric analytical extensions of Benfords law for first digits of numerical data is proposed. Two generalized Benford distributions are considered, namely the two-sided power Benford (TSPB) distribution, which has been introduced in Hürlimann(2003), and the new Pareto Benford (PB) distribution. Based on the minimum chisquare estimators, the fitting capabilities of ...
